SMCKL 5: Swarm Badge Success!

EDIT: Hell yeah boys & girls, we hit the mark with 50+ people checking in at Menara Star. May this, Malaysia’s first swarm badge, give you ultimate bragging rights. At least until a large group of geeks with smartphones congregate somewhere.

==========

The fifth SMCKL is going to be about ‘Government in the Age of Social Media’, and the turn out is massive: an expected crowd of almost 200 people in a place meant for 100+. In fact, the crowd response was so overwhelming, they had to move the location to Menara Star (yes, the newspaper one).

Since there are going to be so many people - who are supposed to be SM junkies - in one place, this is going to be the perfect chance to score the elusive Swarm Badge. Which failed to happen at the recent KL twestival. :(

Some tips on how to get the swarm badge:

  1. You need to be bloody on foursquare. Register here: http://foursquare.com
  2. Have internet access. Don’t have a smart phone? No problem, The Star allows visitors access to their wifi IF they have a MyStar account. Wifi moochers, do yourself a favor & preregister here: https://mystar.com.my/registration/
  3. Check in at the same place. The SMCKL blog says to checkin to the Cybertorium, but the best match I can find is called the Menara Star.
  4. Don’t bungle the date/time. It’s happening on Tuesday, March 30th at 7:00 PM.

Some other important info:

  1. The location: Level 2, Menara Star, 15 Jalan 16/11, Petaling Jaya Kuala Lumpur, 46350
  2. Parking: Parking at Phileo Damansara II is at a flat rate of RM3 per entry after 6pm.
  3. The Panel moderator: Asohan Aryaduray (The Star) @Asohan
  4. The speakers:
  • Khairy Jamaluddin (Member of Parliament, UMNO Youth Chief) @KhairyKJ
  • Tony Pua (Member of Parliament, DAP) @Tony Pua
  • Tina Malone (US Embassy)
  • Kam Raslan (writer and director)@kamraslan

See you there, and remember to checkin.

so I took a walk

Going for the #TaliTenang event in Bangsar. No idea what I’m talking about? Here’s their press release:

Remember ‘KL Freeze in Union’? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…

We want to reunite with you!

So much has happened in the last few weeks that has cause our country to be buzzing with agreements and disagreements.

But we’re proud that despite all that’s happened, we the Rakyat, have managed to keep our cool.

Let’s celebrate the fact that we have grown up to be a level-headed cool lot! Let’s inspire those not-so-cool to be cool :]

Let’s do something symbolic. Come with a piece of rope/string and we will tie them together to make one long, beautiful, cool rope that represents each and every one of us.

We will then take our fantastic work of art on a short, 15-minute tour for our fellow Malaysians to see.

Come and join us! Anyone and everyone! All you have to do is:

1. Bring a piece of rope/string the length of your right arm [Any colour or texture]

2. Wear a white t-shirt

3. If you have a Malaysian flag, bring it along

I expect a few other twitterers I met at SMCKL to be there to. Wonder if I’ll bump into them. Will take photos if possible.

You Rais me up

To anyone not Malaysian, the #yorais tag must be pretty confusing. What with more important news at hand, like Cadbury’s handover to Kraft.

Rais lasts 4 hours

It started with this news article, where Malaysia’s Information Communication and Culture Minister (aka Censorship goon), Rais Yatim, basically said Malaysians shouldn’t get too into the whole internet business, especially in regards to twitter and facebook. ‘Cause it’s shady western stuff.

He also tells Malaysians not to make fun of non-net savvy people. Which we blatantly ignore.

Two tweets that best summed up the Rais issue:

When Prometheus stole fire from gods to give it to mortals, #yorais said to give it back. It’s evil. We don’t use dat kind of technology.
-akukelabu

Rais provides an unfounded & silly reason for people to turn their backs on something potentially useful/fun. This tweet also keeps to the “Yo mama’s so old” format.

OMG! I think the fire last night was Rais Yatim trying to send a message to his friends! kantoi! #yorais
- @leviasher

Not only suggesting that Rais has other clueless old-fogie friends, but it also references the fire in Tun Sambanthan. The fire in which the news thanks social media for the headsup. Flying in the face of Rais’ Amishness. Kantoi!

And one last tweet that’s tumblr related:

He so ancient he think Tumblr is how his kids bring water to school. #yorais
-@altimet

For more silliness, just search the #yorais hashtag or Spinzer’s blog.
