Dem a-galang deh
Picking up an old copy of Black Book (May 2009), I see an article about Beth Ditto of Gossip, covering the usual topics: she’s a big girl (200 pounds to 5 feet), openly lesbian, a radical feminist punk, etc.
And despite all this (oh, how careful they are to make her alternative everything not sound like a disability), despite praising or at least attentively listening to her tales of being different, immediately afterwards, they feature:
Rachel Weisz.
How more “classic beauty” can you get? Sure she has the occasional unusual film role - a mummy, two conmen, and Voldemort - but, by God, she’s WASPy.
Was it played for laughs? “Our audience is intelligent, they’ll see the irony!” Nope, I’m pretty sure it went:
“what goes in after page 26?”
“page 27…is the Weisz article!”
“okay, page 28?”
Or it could be brilliantly crafted irony. ‘Cause any shit will fly, if you’re playing it for irony.
